The Effect of Housing related characteristics on Life Satisfaction of Single or Coupled Elderly Households: Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Depression
Ryu Ji-Yeon

Abstract
This study aims to examine how the physical, economic, and socio-environmental characteristics of housing affect life satisfaction for single or coupled elderly households and to verify whether depression mediates the relationship between residential factors and life satisfaction. A hierarchical regression analysis was conducted on 3,891 single or coupled elderly households aged 65 or older using the data from the Korea Welfare Panel(2021).
Meanwhile, the analysis method proposed by Hayes(2013) was used to investigate the mediating effects of depression. The main findings of the study are as follows. First, single elderly households have poorer housing characteristics than coupled, so they are vulnerable to depression and life satisfaction. Second, for single or coupled elderly households, housing type, price, trust and reciprocity in the residential environment directly affected life satisfaction. Third, for single or coupled elderly households, it was found that depression mediated the relationship between the minimum housing standard, price, trust, reciprocity, and life satisfaction. Fourth, only for single elderly households, depression had a mediate effect on the relationship between housing welfare services and life satisfaction. Based on the results of this study, the policy and practical implications for improving the life satisfaction of single or coupled elderly households were discussed.
